Lithuanians are increasingly using remote notarial services

2025.07.01

On July 1, Lithuania marks four years since remote notarial services became legally available to the public. Since their introduction in 2021, these services have become an increasingly popular choice among citizens. While usage was relatively modest in the initial year, recent data shows significant growth. In the first half of this year alone, the number of remote notarial transactions has increased by 22% compared to the same period last year.

In 2021, when this option was first introduced in Lithuania, remote notarial acts were rare — all notaries performed fewer than 100 such acts per month. Today, each notary conducts nearly 800 remote acts annually, or about 50 per month.

“When this legal service — the possibility to carry out notarial acts remotely — was launched, we were pleased to offer citizens a convenient, fast, and efficient way to handle important legal matters regardless of distance or time constraints. The statistics from the first year were promising, and we anticipated surpassing 10% of all notarial acts being performed remotely. We reached this milestone after three years, and the data from the first half of this year indicates that the scope of these services may continue to grow,” said Marius Stračkaitis, President of the Lithuanian Chamber of Notaries.

During the first half of this year, notaries performed nearly 70,000 remote notarial acts, representing a 22% increase compared to the same period last year. The most common remote acts were mortgage transactions and their modifications, as well as various real estate transactions and related acts. These accounted for more than half of all remote notarial acts performed in the first half of the year.
